| Centennial baseball once again loaded (4/6/09)
BY BRIAN ROTH The Centennial League had a down year in the sport of basketball. Doesn't happen often, but that was the case this past winter. Enter Springtime and the league's baseball coaches wish they could say the same for their sport. The top of this league is absolutely loaded with quality teams, stocked with Division I talent. The addition of Cherokee Trail (moved up from 4A , where they won a state championship in 2007) and Arapahoe (played in the Continental League last year) have only solidified the brawn of the Centennial. The shame in all of this? The league only gets 4 playoff bids, meaning 2 of the top 6 teams, all of whom are good, will be lamenting their season on April 27th. We opened our baseball broadcast schedule on April 3rd with a Centennial League affair.......Mullen @ Arapahoe. Mullen (8-2) got their 2nd straight win over the Warriors and just like that, the Mustangs are still atop of the league with a 5-1 mark, putting them in great position to get one of the 4 league bids. Arapahoe (6-4) on the otherhand, yikes. They have a talented line-up with two of the best players in the state (CF Brian Guymon and C Justin Byrd) and a deep pitching staff. But, they are now in big trouble in the Centennial with just a 2-3 mark. They still have to play Grandview and Cherokee Trail twice and Cherry Creek one more time. Meanwhile, Creek and Cherokee Trail only have early 1 conference loss and Grandview and Smoky Hill have just 2 losses in conference. Two of these afore mentioned teams will be sitting home for the district tournament on May 2nd and no one wants to be "that" program lamenting a season that could have been. |
