Heavyweights clash in Highlands Ranch (1/16/09)

BY BRIAN ROTH

Another packed gymnasium, another clash between the two top girls basketball programs in the state of Colorado. And, yes, another win for Highlands Ranch. It was everything that could have been expected and perhaps a little more, as the Falcons continued their mastery of Regis with a thrilling 56-53 win.

So what does this win mean for top-ranked Highlands Ranch? Well for starters, it clearly establishes the 3-time defending champs as the team to beat once again in 2009. But it also speaks volume about the job coach Caryn Jarocki has done. This is a Falcon program that lost multiple D-I players off last year's team, including the player of the year, Alyssa Fressle. Add that to the fact Highlands Ranch only returned 2 players who received significant varsity playing time last year. The rest of the squad? Mostly JV players last year. But, despite a game in which the Falcons trailed by as many as 9 in the first half, and by 2 with under 30 seconds to go, they found a way to win. Again. And, it was Senior Jennessa Burke to provide the game winner. Again.

But, do not feel sorry for Regis and coach Carl Mattei. They are just fine. Still a vastly talented team that is still considered by everyone to be among the favorites for the Gold Ball. For a loss in January is far different than a loss in March.
